One of the biggest problems that new webmasters have to face is how to get more website traffic as soon as possible – and keeping it. Actually, even a lot of veteran webmasters with several years of website and/or blogging experience have to contend with this problem as well. It’s no wonder that a whole new industry was born out of a single, concentrated need: getting more traffic to your site. Indeed, it seems that getting more and more traffic has become sort of a “Holy Grail” or a quest for webmasters.

I am not sure when or how it actually happened, but people have realized that just because you built it doesn’t mean it automatically counts. With the growth of the World Wide Web that has exploded into over a million websites and blogs, Internet users need a good reason to visit your site, and even more reasons to keep coming back. Without any idea of how or where to start, a newbie webmaster will definitely be lost before he can even get started with this task of generating traffic.

There exists a lot of solutions to this traffic generation problem, actually. You can do it the easy way and buy traffic from online vendors. This will result in your website being hit from all angles with automated programs. However, keep in mind that you’re only getting hits from machines, not real people. Your stats will jump, but your sales probably won’t.

A lot of people try setting up multiple websites or blogs that connect to your main site. This is actually a very effective way to build up your hit count, but only if your site’s content makes for excellent reading or viewing. Without quality content, your site will soon stagnate, and all the other connecting sites and blogs with it. If your site has quality content, then this should be no problem for you.

Another popular technique is utilizing the power of RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds. Create an RSS feed for your website and subscribe to others as well. Make sure that these other feeds are somehow related to your site’s niche, to get better results. However, this method has the same caveat attached to it as that of the multiple sites technique I have mentioned above, and that is to make sure that your site’s RSS feed provides interesting and quality content to your subscribers; otherwise, it’s pretty useless.

Although I haven’t used this next technique, I should mention it for the sake of variety. Traffic exchanges are another good source of traffic for sites, but although they can pile up the hits on your counter, most of the time the people visiting your site cannot be considered as targeted traffic. They are just there because of the credits they are getting from the traffic exchange program. If you are running an e-commerce website and this method is your only way of getting traffic, then I’m telling you now that you are doomed to fail.

There are a few side benefits of traffic exchanges, though. It can increase your website’s Alexa rating, which is factored in by some search engines when ranking your site. Thus, a higher Alexa rating may produce higher search engine placements, which in turn could translate into more targeted traffic this time around.

How to Make Your Web Site Work For You

Internet surfers have a very short attention span, roughly ten seconds, and this is the only time you have to capture their attention using your website. With hundreds of millions of websites online, and the three biggest search engine companies tightening their ranking regulations, competition has intensified and it is imperative that a website not only be attractive but ìstickyî i.e. able to attract repeat visitors. A website should also have the necessary qualities to attract not only unique traffic. For a website to be truly memorable, it has to encompass the following:

1.	Good design

2.	Usability-logical navigation

3.	Fresh and unique content

4. Search engine optimization

Good design

A truly memorable website will incorporate good design. Many websites offer great content but forget that the majority of web surfers are actually less than 25 years old. Good design also means that the graphics are optimized and therefore the site downloads fast regardless of Internet speeds. To do this an expert graphics designer should be employed who should create graphics that are light (e.g. gifs). Care should be taken when adding animations such as flash which require viewers to download additional software in order to view the site.

Usability

A site should have a logical navigation. This means that it should be straight-forward and the surfer should not spend a lot of time trying to decipher where to go next or how to get back to the home page. A navigation system that works is one that is consistent across all pages and clearly points the way back and to all the other pages.

Fresh and Unique Content

In order for a website to truly be a success, it has to offer value to the viewer. That means it must contain information that is relevant and that meets the needs of the surfer. Many websites have valuable information but it is never updated on a regular basis. Regularly updated content is also very important as we shall see, for a site to obtain good search engine rankings.

Search Engine Optimization

Search engines employ special software (ìspidersî) which search the web for fresh and relevant content including links. This is what determines search engine rankings. When designing a website, extra care should be given to keywords that not only describe the site but the product or service you are offering.

Things to doOur webmaster guidelines provide general design, technical, and quality guidelines. Below are more detailed tips for creating a Google-friendly site.Give visitors the information they’re looking forProvide high-quality content on your pages, especially your homepage. This is the single most important thing to do. If your pages contain useful information, their content will attract many visitors and entice webmasters to link to your site. In creating a helpful, information-rich site, write pages that clearly and accurately describe your topic. Think about the words users would type to find your pages and include those words on your site.Make sure that other sites link to yoursLinks help our crawlers find your site and can give your site greater visibility in our search results. When returning results for a search, Google combines PageRank (our view of a page’s importance) with sophisticated text-matching techniques to display pages that are both important and relevant to each search. Google counts the number of votes a page receives as part of its PageRank assessment, interpreting a link from page A to page B as a vote by page A for page B. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important.”Keep in mind that our algorithms can distinguish natural links from unnatural links. Natural links to your site develop as part of the dynamic nature of the web when other sites find your content valuable and think it would be helpful for their visitors. Unnatural links to your site are placed there specifically to make your site look more popular to search engines. Some of these types of links (such as link schemes and doorway pages) are covered in our webmaster guidelines.Only natural links are useful for the indexing and ranking of your site.Make your site easily accessibleBuild your site with a logical link structure. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.Use a text browser, such as Lynx, to examine your site. Most spiders see your site much as Lynx would. If features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Macromedia Flash keep you from seeing your entire site in a text browser, then spiders may have trouble crawling it.Consider creating static copies of dynamic pages. Although the Google index includes dynamic pages, they comprise a small portion of our index. If you suspect that your dynamically generated pages (such as URLs containing question marks) are causing problems for our crawler, you might create static copies of these pages. If you create static copies, don’t forget to add your dynamic pages to your robots.txt file to prevent us from treating them as duplicates.Things to AvoidDon’t fill your page with lists of keywords, attempt to “cloak” pages, or put up “crawler only” pages. If your site contains pages, links, or text that you don’t intend visitors to see, Google considers those links and pages deceptive and may ignore your site.Don’t feel obligated to purchase a search engine optimization service. Some companies claim to “guarantee” high ranking for your site in Google’s search results. While legitimate consulting firms can improve your site’s flow and content, others employ deceptive tactics in an attempt to fool search engines. Be careful; if your domain is affiliated with one of these deceptive services, it could be banned from our index.Don’t use images to display important names, content, or links. Our crawler doesn’t recognize text contained in graphics. Use ALT attributes if the main content and keywords on your page can’t be formatted in regular HTML.Don’t create multiple copies of a page under different URLs. Many sites offer text-only or printer-friendly versions of pages that contain the same content as the corresponding graphic-rich pages. To ensure that your preferred page is included in our search results, you’ll need to block duplicates from our spiders using a robots.txt file. For information about using a robots.txt file, please visit our information on blocking Googlebot.

At the MIDEM conference in Cannes, Sony Ericsson announced deals with 10 major record labels, adding over 5 million new tracks to its extensive catalogue. Sony Ericsson also unveiled the design and URL for PlayNow(TM) arena and launched PlayNow(TM) Uncut, (formerly M-Buzz(TM)) a music promotional space for new, unsigned and developing artists.Record label partnershipsToday Sony Ericsson announced partnerships with 10 of the largest international and regional music labels including: Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, EMI, The Orchard, IODA, The PocketGroup, Hungama, X5 Music, Bonnier Amigo and VidZone, adding over 5 million new tracks to PlayNow(TM) arena. Sony Ericsson is currently negotiating further deals with a host of regional labels to further broaden the variety of music available and bring a wealth of localised content direct to the consumer.Sony Ericsson introduced PlayNow(TM) in February 2004 as the easiest way to pre-listen and then purchase polyphonic ringtones directly to your phone. The service has proved a hit with consumers and is now available in 32 countries around the world, with annual free and premium downloads through both PlayNow and Fun & Downloads having reached more than 200 million. Since launch, the scope of the service has expanded to mirror the functionality of Sony Ericsson’s phones to include mastertones (MP3 ringtones), games, full music tracks, themes and wallpapers. In November 2007 Sony Ericsson announced its intention to further develop its PlayNow(TM) service with PlayNow(TM) arena, offering access to a greatly expanded range of content and combining the power of the PlayNow(TM) catalogue with unique applications like TrackID(TM), which identifies songs and allows them to be downloaded directly to your phone or PC.Speaking at the Sony Ericsson event at MIDEM in Cannes, Sony Ericsson’s Executive Vice President, Anders Runevad, presented the enhanced PlayNow(TM) arena service and emphasised the importance of industry partnerships delivering digital content and an unparalleled multimedia experience:”We are delighted to announce deals with such high calibre record labels. This will help realise our vision for PlayNow(TM) arena as a service that will be developed in collaboration with our partners. Our commitment is to work with the industry to ensure we are building an experience-based and intuitive content delivery platform, enabling the development of an ecosystem that provides a unique experience for the consumer and a business model where everybody prospers.”With mobile games remaining a key focus, Sony Ericsson has also added 250 new games through existing deals with leading games manufactures such as EA Games, Gameloft, THQ, Glu, Digital Chocolate and I-Play. Sony Ericsson users download more games to their phones than users of any other mobile phone brand*. These deals take another step in cementing its number one position in the mobile games market.PlayNow(TM) UncutPlayNow(TM) Uncut (previously know as M-BUZZ(TM)) is a pro motional space for breaking new and emerging artists via Sony Ericsson’s product, content and marketing channels. PlayNow(TM) Uncut showcases selected, pre viously unreleased tracks, videos, artwork, interviews, tour dates and other artist information on Sony Ericsson mobile phones and the web at www.playnow-uncut.com.The rebranding and alignment with PlayNow(TM) opens up new channel opportunities for artists and enables the site to target consumers worldwide, including the United States of America for the first time. With an international reach, the service has always been about presenting the best new talentsfrom around the world, whatever their style or native language. Apart from the current streaming possibilities, the highest rated and most listened to tracks will be made available for sale in the music section of PlayNow(TM) arena. For artists, this will add revenue possibilities to the already extensive promotional benefits of appearing there. One Arena. Unlimited experiences”The PlayNow(TM) arena is an open environment that offers something for everyone. We see PlayNow(TM) Uncut as the edgy version, whilst the PlayNow(TM) music section is more a case of familiarity, giving consumers something they know and are already comfortable with. Consumer experience is our absolute priority and we will continue to develop PlayNow(TM) arena as a service that appeals to all consumer segments and lifestyle trends,” said Martin Blomkvist, Head of Content Acquisition & Management at Sony Ericsson. The PlayNow(TM) arena will be brought directly to the consumer at: www.playnow-arena.comThe PlayNow(TM) arena will launch in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland in May 2008 with more European markets to come at the end of Q2 2008 and further expansion in Europe, Americas and Asia during Q3 and Q4. Sony Ericsson predicts that the PlayNow(TM) arena will be active in close to 30 marketsby the end of 2008.TrackID(TM)The growth in popularity of the TrackID(TM) application has rocketed around the globe, presently recording more than 200,000 hits per day equal to more than two each second, a figure that has doubled in the last three months. TrackID(TM) will be an integral part of the PlayNow(TM) arena experience, offering an instant way to first hear a track - for example, in a coffee shop or on the radio - and then get it to your phone and PC. The PlayNow(TM) arena itself will feature TrackID(TM) Charts, created by consumers in real time using TrackID(TM) around the world. This will allow consumers tosee what songs other users are searching for and wanting to hear the most, both globally and in their own market.Sony Ericsson at Midem 2008Sony Ericsson will be showcasing its PlayNow(TM) arena music store as well as demonstrating its latest handsets and accessories at booth R31.01 at Midem 2008 in Cannes, France.

Last month, Trevor spoke on the Sitemaps: Oversold, Misused or On The Money? panel at Search Engine Strategies in Chicago. After receiving a lot of great questions at the conference in addition to all the feedback we receive in our Help Group, we’ve pulled together a FAQ:

Q: I submitted a Sitemap, but my URLs haven’t been [crawled/indexed] yet. Isn’t that what a Sitemap is for?

A: Submitting a Sitemap helps you make sure Google knows about the URLs on your site. It can be especially helpful if your content is not easily discoverable by our crawler (such as pages accessible only through a form). It is not, however, a guarantee that those URLs will be crawled or indexed. We use information from Sitemaps to augment our usual crawl and discovery processes. Learn more.

Q: If it doesn’t get me automatically crawled and indexed, what does a Sitemap do?

A: Sitemaps give information to Google to help us better understand your site. This can include making sure we know about all your URLs, how often and when they’re updated, and what their relative importance is. Also, if you submit your Sitemap via Webmaster Tools, we’ll show you stats such as how many of your Sitemap’s URLs are indexed. Learn more.

Q: Will a Sitemap help me rank better?

A: A Sitemap does not affect the actual ranking of your pages. However, if it helps get more of your site crawled (by notifying us of URLs we didn’t previously didn’t know about, and/or by helping us prioritize the URLs on your site), that can lead to increased presence and visibility of your site in our index. Learn more.

Q: If I set all of my pages to have priority 1.0, will that make them rank higher (or get crawled faster) than someone else’s pages that have priority 0.8?

A: No. As stated in our Help Center, “priority only indicates the importance of a particular URL relative to other URLs on your site, and doesn’t impact the ranking of your pages in search results.” Indicating that all of your pages have the same priority is the same as not providing any priority information at all.

Q: Is there any point in submitting a Sitemap if all the metadata (<changefreq>, <priority>, etc.) is the same for each URL, or if I’m not sure it’s accurate?

A: If the value of a particular tag is the same for 100% of the URLs in your Sitemap, you don’t need to include that tag in your Sitemap. Including it won’t hurt you, but it’s essentially the same as not submitting any information, since it doesn’t help distinguish between your URLs. If you’re not sure whether your metadata is accurate (for example, you don’t know when a particular URL was last modified), it’s better to omit that tag for that particular URL than to just make up a value which may be inaccurate.

Q: I’ve heard about people who submitted a Sitemap and got penalized shortly afterward. Can a Sitemap hurt you?

A: Only if it falls on you from a great height. (Seriously, though: if it ever happened that someone was penalized after submitting a Sitemap, it would have been purely coincidental. Google does not penalize you for submitting a Sitemap.)

Q: Where can I put my Sitemap? Does it have to be at the root of my site?

A: We recently enabled Sitemap cross-submissions, which means that you can put your Sitemap just about anywhere as long as you have the following sites verified in yourWebmaster Tools account:

the site on which the Sitemap is located

the site(s) whose URLs are referenced in the Sitemap

Note that cross-submissions may not work for search engines other than Google. Learn more about Sitemap cross-submissions.

Q: Can I just submit the site map that my webmaster made of my site? I don’t get this whole XML thing.

A: There’s a difference between a (usually HTML) site map built to help humans navigate around your site, and an XML Sitemap built for search engines. Both of them are useful, and it’s great to have both. A site map on your domain can also help search engines find your content (since crawlers can follow the links on the page). However, if you submit an HTML site map in place of a Sitemap, Webmaster Tools will report an error because an HTML page isn’t one of our recognized Sitemap formats. Also, if you create an XML Sitemap, you’ll be able to give us more information than you can with an HTML site map (which is just a collection of links). Learn more about supported Sitemap formats.

Q: Which Sitemap format is the best?

A: We recommend the XML Sitemap protocol as defined by sitemaps.org. XML Sitemaps have the advantage of being upgradeable: you can start simple if you want (by just listing your URLs), but—unlike a text file Sitemap—you can easily upgrade an XML Sitemap later on to include more metadata. XML Sitemaps are also more comprehensive than an Atom or RSS feed submitted as a Sitemap, since feeds usually only list your most recent URLs (rather than all the URLs you want search engines to know about).

Q: If I have multiple URLs that point to the same content, can I use my Sitemap to indicate my preferred URL for that content?

A: Yes. While we can’t guarantee that our algorithms will display that particular URL in search results, it’s still helpful for you to indicate your preference by including that URL in your Sitemap. We take this into consideration, along with other signals, when deciding which URL to display in search results.

Learn more about duplicate content.

Q: Does the placement of a URL within a Sitemap file matter? Will the URLs at the beginning of the file get better treatment than the URLs near the end?

A: No, and no.

Q: If my site has multiple sections (e.g. a blog, a forum, and a photo gallery), should I submit one Sitemap for the site, or multiple Sitemaps (one for each section)?

A: You may submit as few or as many Sitemaps as you like (up to these limits). Organize them in whatever way you find easiest to maintain. If you create multiple Sitemaps, you can use a Sitemap Index file to list them all. Learn more.
